A flood barrier helps prevent external floodwater from entering a building. However, during intense rainfall or a rapid rise in outdoor water levels, water may still seep through gaps around the barrier, walls, floors, or building joints. Water may also backflow through the drainage system into a basement, garage, or other low-lying area.

The two pieces of equipment perform different functions:

Together, they help block floodwater outside while draining accumulated water inside. However, this does not guarantee that the protected area will remain completely dry. The remaining water level depends on the pump design, floor condition, how water collects and flows toward the pump, and the installation environment.


What Should Be Considered When Installing a Pump Behind a Flood Barrier?

When installing a pump behind a flood barrier, consider the pump location, discharge piping, power supply, and backup power arrangements. These factors directly affect whether accumulated water can be removed safely and effectively.

1. Pump Location

Place the pump in a sump behind the flood barrier, at the lowest point of a basement driveway, or in another area where water naturally collects.

Before positioning the pump:

  • Confirm that the surface is level and stable.
  • Make sure water can flow naturally toward the pump.

  • Remove plastic bags, leaves, sediment, and other debris that could obstruct the pump inlet.
  • Leave sufficient space around the pump for operation and inspection.
  • Make sure the pump and discharge hose will not interfere with the flood barrier.

If the floor slope prevents water from reaching the pump, drainage performance may be reduced even when the pump is operating normally.


2. Discharge Piping

Route the discharge hose over the flood barrier or through an appropriate discharge path to a suitable outdoor drainage location.

The discharge point should have sufficient drainage capacity and be positioned far enough from the building entrance to prevent discharged water from flowing back into the protected area.

The hose should:

  • Be properly secured
  • Remain as straight and unobstructed as possible
  • Be protected from kinking, twisting, or compression
  • Avoid interfering with the installation or sealing of the flood barrier
  • Discharge into an area where water will not flow back toward the building
  • Avoid creating a hazard for pedestrians or vehicles

The diameter, length, bends, and elevation difference of the discharge piping all affect the actual flow rate. Pump suitability should therefore not be evaluated solely by its maximum flow rate.


3. Power Supply and Backup Power

Power outages may occur during heavy rain or typhoons. A backup power plan should therefore be evaluated in advance.

Confirm that the power supply capacity, output voltage, and connection method meet the pump requirements. Power outlets, extension-cord connections, and other electrical equipment should be positioned above the potential flood level and protected with an appropriate residual-current device (RCD).

Before the rainy or typhoon season:

  • Confirm that the supply voltage and capacity meet the pump requirements.
  • Check that electrical connections are dry and properly protected.
  • Inspect the power cable for damage.
  • Test the residual-current protection device.
  • Perform a trial run of the pump and discharge piping.


Can a Generator Be Used to Power the Pump During an Outage?

A generator may be used as a backup power source if its voltage, capacity, and operating method meet the pump requirements. The generator manufacturer’s instructions and the pump operating instructions should both be followed.

Generators and gasoline- or diesel-powered pumping equipment must be operated outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Never operate this equipment in a basement, garage, indoor space, or other enclosed or poorly ventilated location, as accumulated exhaust fumes can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Backup power arrangements should be planned and tested before the rainy or typhoon season rather than after flooding has already begun.

If indoor flooding or water leakage is severe, prioritize personal safety. Have a qualified professional inspect the electrical supply and equipment condition before beginning drainage work. Never handle plugs, outlets, extension-cord connections, or damaged cables while standing in water.
